12 Questions to Ask Before You Rent a Storage Unit

You have questions, we have answers.

We get it. Finding a place to store your stuff easily, safely, and confidently can be stressful. Before you commit to a storage unit, make sure you get answers to these questions.

Question #1: Are there any additional fees besides my rent when I move in?

Answer: Most storage locations charge additional fees when you rent a space; however, some charge more than others. We charge a one-time fee of $20 that covers everything to complete the rental process and get you into your space.

Question #2: Do I need insurance?

Answer: We require all customers to have insurance on their stored property. You can meet this requirement by providing proof of a homeowners or renters policy. We also sell affordable and effective insurance options designed specifically to cover storage spaces.

Question #3: Will my rate ever increase? If so, when?

Answer: Rate increases happen at just about every storage location; however, some might raise your rate a lot more frequently than you’d expect. Nine months is generally the soonest we’d consider increasing a customer’s rate.

Question #4: Can I access my storage unit at all hours of the day, including holidays?

Answer: We offer broad access hours from early in the morning to late evening. If you need 24-hour access, our managers can discuss options with you.

Question #5: Do you have heated units?

Answer: Heated units are particularly helpful in the cold, wet winter months. Many of our locations offer heated units, so contact the location nearest you or visit our website to find out more.

Question #6: What types of units are available (drive-up, walk-up, indoor access, etc.)?

Answer: This can vary from property to property. Most of our properties offer a variety of inside/hallway units and drive-up access units. Some have units on multiple floors, while others have covered and uncovered parking and very large units with motorized roll-up doors.

Question #7: What do you do for pest control?

Answer: We take a proactive approach to pest control, with preventive maintenance contracts in place at all of our locations. Our pest control vendor is a local company that regularly visits each of our properties. We also have a strict no-food policy in all units.

Question #8: What type of security do you have?

Answer: We customize security features based on the property. Many of our locations have managers who live on-site. We also have cameras at most locations and fully automated gate systems with individual PIN code access. Plus, all of our managers are required to inspect the entire property multiple times a day.

Question #9: Can I speak to someone on-site directly and quickly?

Answer: Absolutely. All of our location phones ring straight to the property. If our manager is helping another customer, our call center can handle most questions or send a message to the property manager to return the call.

Question #10: Do I need to bring my own lock or can I purchase one on-site?

Answer: We don’t provide locks; however; we do sell high-security locks designed specifically for storage units.

Question #11: Can I see the unit before I rent it?

Answer: Absolutely. You should always be offered a tour of any storage property before you rent a unit. Our managers will be glad to show you a variety of available units to meet your needs.

Question #12: How long are your leases? Is month-to-month an option?

Answer: We don’t lock anyone into long-term contracts. All of our leases are month-to-month.
