Storage Tips
Begin packing a couple of weeks before you move. Careful packing prevents breakage and loss of small and fragile items. You can obtain packing supplies from a local moving company. Use sturdy corrugated cartons and packing paper, sealing tape and a magic marker pen to clearly label your boxes. Determine which items will go into storage and which items go to your new home. Then follow these simple packing tips. They will save you time and trouble, help avoid damage to your goods and make maximum use of your storage.
Appliances
- Tape appliance door shut when moving. Secure movable parts with paper or wedge. Wrap a paper pad around each item for protection. Freezer, refrigerator, washer and dryer make excellent packing cartons for bedding and towels. Be sure to clean your appliances before moving them.
Beds
- Tie bed rails together with rope or plastic tape. As you take the bed apart, mark all pieces so you know which bed rails go with which headboard, etc. Make sure all screws and bolts are kept in a secure place. Cover all mattresses to keep them clean during moving and storage.
Books
- Books can be heavy in bunches. Pack them in small cartons, holding weight to less than 30 pounds for easy lifting. Line all book cartons with plastic and fill empty spaces with packing paper. Garbage bags work as good liners.
Case Goods
- Use the drawers as extra packing boxes. Fill them with small and fragile items. Sweaters, blankets and towels make excellent packing padding.
Clothes
- Wardrobe boxes are strongly recommended for hanging items. Wardrobe boxes have a hanging bar just like your closet making it easy to transfer clothes from your closet to the box.
Boxes
- Go easy on your back. Limit the boxes to 30 pounds. With a magic marker pen, label all boxes so you know what items are in what boxes.
