Storage Safety

storage safety

Northwest Self Storage makes every effort to provide the safest environment possible for you and your belongings, but there some proactive precautions you can take to be extra careful! Here are some tips for keeping your items secure.

Store Valuables Properly
You shouldn’t stow irreplaceable items, such as old photographs or family heirlooms, in self storage units. If circumstance leaves you without other options, put unique treasures and high-value items in the rear of the unit.

To prevent identity fraud, avoid keeping important documents such as birth certificates, bank account information or passports in a storage unit.

The Right Lock
We recommend you use a disc, cylinder or closed-shackle padlock for storage units. These locks require a lot of time, effort, and special tools to burgle, so thieves will likely bypass your storage unit in favor of those more easily looted.

Detailed List
When you first rent a storage unit, create a detailed list of everything placed inside, and update the list each time you add or remove items from the unit. This not only provides peace of mind, but it also gives you an already itemized list for insurance companies, the police and the storage company in case anything should happen; it’s easier to have the list than to create one from memory.

Insurance
Insurance is a great way to provide an extra layer of security for your possessions. As you follow tips to safely store your possessions, follow a golden rule of storage: If you insure items inside your home, insure them outside of your home. Check your homeowner’s or renter’s policy to see if your storage unit items are covered. If not, self storage insurance policies are available.

Protect yourself
Even in protected storage facilities, protect yourself. Only access your unit during daylight hours if possible, and try to make yourself acquainted with the facility manager and personnel.
